A profile field is an additional piece of information you wish to collect from a user outside of the basic information the system already collects. Examples of this include marketing information, additional demographic details for grants etc., historical member data, and more! 

This information is asked as part of your user registration form and can then be linked to the profile fields. The profile fields then show on the Info tab of the users profile. 

Users are not able to edit the profile fields after submitted them but admins are able to from the admin dashboard.
